Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has criticised his players after they were sent off in the third minute of the game against Wigan.
The Magpies were outclassed by the visitors in the first half as they dominated possession and the result left Benitezes team under severe pressure.
Benitez described the defeat as “unprofessional” and said his team had not had enough time to prepare and put in the necessary work for the game.
But Newcastle defender Ben Taylor was among the players who left the pitch with a head injury.
“I’ve been working with Rafa all year and I’m shocked that this has happened,” Taylor said.
“We had a lot of time to make sure we were ready and the manager’s judgement was wrong and that’s why we didn’t get the result.”
Everyone should know what the manager has done, but this is a very professional club.
We’ve had the experience of playing against him for years and it’s a shame.
“He has been a professional manager for a long time and I just hope he doesn’t get any further and he doesnt get to be in charge of the club any longer.”
The players have been here for a while now and I know that when the manager says its the first game he’ll give a lot and he’ll get back to work.
“Thats what I’ve always been looking for from Rafa.”
Benitezes side were second from bottom in the Premier League, four points behind Newcastle United, after their defeat at home to Sunderland on Saturday.
But the Magpie manager said he was “stunted” by the way Newcastle had played after they had been under pressure and that he had not seen enough to judge his players.
“They had chances in the game and we could have done better,” he said.
“We had some chances but I’m not sure how we were able to turn them into goals.”
Newcastle, who are third in the Championship, remain unbeaten in their last six matches, having won their previous three matches.
